Costa Ya Watan, The First Maghrebian Slapstick comedian play in USA organized by Washington Moroccan Club 1995
It is with the problems of the Moroccan Community in mind and the extension of its problems in the homeland as well that WMC decided to invite the famous Moroccan theatrical company Theater 80 under the leadership of one of the most beloved Moroccan duos Khadija Assad and Aziz Saad Allah.
Theater 80 was invited to perform their play Costa Ya Watan which had a huge success all over Morocco because of its take on Morocco’s social problems through the use of satire.
This event was a different one form the preceding ones that WMC hosted regularly since 1990. Nonetheless keeping its stance as the leader of cultural events meant to not only assist the members of the community in coping with the hardship of immigration through Moroccan entertainment and culture, but it also meant to be able to keep this community abr east of what was happening in the socio-cultural and political scene in Morocco.
The production of the play itself was a huge challenge as different technical and editorial particulars needed to be taken into consideration and accounted for such the sets needed to be built to accommodate the different acts of the play, and also the actual dialect “Darija” used in the play that needed to be adapted to accommodate the different members of the audience who were Arab but not necessarily Moroccans.
Costa Ya Watan proved upon its presentation to be a quite big success as many Moroccans and Arab Americans came in from all parts of the metro area and judging from the interaction of the audience all had a great time as evidenced not only by the constant laughter but by the standing ovation as well at the conclusion of the last act and the curtain was drawn on yet another great event signed WMC.
