'I am Arab and Muslim, I do not want to be perceived as Westerner

'I am Arab and Muslim, I do not want to be perceived as Westerner. Proud of my culture'- Moroccan MP
New Haven - "I am an Eastern, African, Arab and Muslim, I do not want to be perceived as a Westerner. I am proud of my culture," Moroccan MP Fatiha Layadi said Thursday in New Haven.

"I am not promoting the image of Moroccan women, but restoring some truths and sharing a reflection on the situation of women in the world," Layadi told a conference, organized by the McMillan Center for International and Regional Studies under the theme: "Women, Religion and Globalization."

"My purpose is to enlighten the American public opinion on the progress made regarding women's rights and dispel deeply entrenched stereotypes," she added.

Concerning Moroccan women, the MP said they have always been renowned for their ideas, their struggle for emancipation and against inequality. Yet, "the 1999-2009 decade is undoubtedly that of Moroccan women," she said.

Morocco has undertaken several reforms to enable women to integrate with the process of socio-economic development, contribute to the governance and enjoy all rights under the Constitution, which is based on the principle of gender equality and equal opportunities, Layadi noted.

“Today, everyone can see that the situation of women has improved significantly in the kingdom in recent years in different fields,” she said in her lecture entitled “Democracy, Islam and Women's Rights: Ten years of reforms in Morocco.”

+ A long struggle in quest for freedom and equality +

Referring to the struggle of Moroccan women and their quest for equality, she cited pioneers like Malika El Fassi, who, encouraged by the late King Mohammed V, promoted women’s access to knowledge by opening the gates of the prestigious university of Al Qaraouine in Fez for them in the late 40s.

She also said that Princess Lalla Aicha has represented her country as ambassador to Rome and London, just after independence, at a time when few women around the world could hold this position.

More recently, through Aicha Ech-Chenna, who won the “2009 Opus Prize,” the equivalent of the Nobel in the United States for social action, all the women working away from the spotlight have been rewarded, Layadi said.

On the ground, few things today impede the progress of women in Morocco, and most often “it is much more tradition than religion” that hinders the everyday life of women, particularly in rural and disadvantaged areas, she underlined before a panel of academics, noting, however, that more and more Moroccan women make their way slowly but steadily taking advantage of changes taking place in the Kingdom.

"Things have changed, as women have evolved. They are more aware of their rights. Women were illiterate and completely dependent on their husbands. Today, women are masters of their own destiny,” the former journalist went on to say.

However, the long struggle for women’s freedom would never have been possible without the political will, illustrated in particular in the reform of personal status (Moudouwana), which has completely revolutionized the real-life of the Moroccan family, she said.

+ HM King Mohammed VI plays key role in promoting women’s conditions +

As many Moroccans know, the actions of HM King Mohammed VI have been instrumental in promoting women’s situation within religion.

In fact, at the economic level, Islam grants important rights to women to manage their own assets; these very rights are respected by Moroccan laws.  Another example of this sweeping change witnessed in the Kingdom is the victory of Soulaliyates, who were granted justice by regaining ownership of their collective lands which are legally theirs, something unheard of a few years ago,” the MP said.

Morocco has made a great leap in its political and social history, “as women can now have access to fields that used to be exclusively belonging to men.
Women’s participation in parliament, the government, diplomacy, politics, and business, is clearly on the rise, she said.

Layadi stressed that the quota system has been a principal factor in boosting women’s presence in politics, expressing hope that female competences will prevail in the gender-based choices.

“Religions is not an obstacle, and geography is not either,” as Rwandan women account for 65% of MPs and as several women around the world are leaders of major Muslim countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey.
