20 years of Morocco  presence in America

Dear Friends,

Thank you for being a strong supporter of the Washington Moroccan Club’s activities in the United States since its creation twenty years ago.

Next year, we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the WMC and I would like to seize this opportunity to invite you to celebrate this event with us and all others whose support for our cause has never wavered.

Since its inception in March 1990, the WMC’s foundations have remained solid and its support has grown significantly to include people from all states and all walks of life. During this time, it has remained at the service of its supporters and has provided them with the finest events Morocco has to offer in the United States, its friend and ally since 1776. It has also served as a platform for recruiting and rallying Moroccan-Americans, as well as friends of Morocco in sharing their knowledge and love for Morocco, as well as their ongoing political involvement in the causes that are dear to our native and host countries.

Our objective is to keep growing and learning from our experiences and our exposure to new developments on all areas, so as to gain strength and become of voice for all those who love Morocco and want to see it gain popularity and support in the United States.

For that, we ask you, our friends, to join us in the celebration of this important milestone in March 2010, which will include twenty distinct events, each aimed at showcasing a different aspect of Moroccan social, economic and cultural life.

In the meantime, please continue to share your views and input, as well as provide us with your unwavering support by joining the WMC as a full-fledged member. Details on how to join are bellow.

I look forward to welcoming you as a member and seeing you in March 2010 for this grand celebration...

Founded by Hassan Samrhouni in 1990, The Washington Moroccan American Club (WMC), was and continues to be the first Moroccan-American organization of its kind to sponsor intercultural, social, business, political and sporting events to promote bilateral relations and to serve the Moroccan community residing within the United States.

Several significant events have been organized by the WMC, including the First Moroccan Festival in May 1992, a 7-day program which featured a number of prominent speakers such as H.E. Ambassador Mohammed Belkhiyat, the Hon. Robert Neumann (Director, Middle East Program CSIS), and Dr. Philip Schyler (Researcher for the UNESCO), artists including Jil Jilala, who came to celebrate their 20th anniversary, as well as showings of two of the best Moroccan movies at the time (Badis and La Bataille des Trois Rois). The Washington Moroccan American Club  also organized Magical Morocco: from the Sahara to the Sea in October 2004, a festival which attracted more than 3500 people from all around the United States and was featured in The Washington Post and The Washington File. These and many other events have earned The organization and its members a  reputation of a managers, coordinators, as well as leaders with a vision and savoir-faire when it comes to Moroccan American community-related issues.

20 years later, the WMC continues to serve the Moroccan American community. This site has been built to commemorate this special occasion and we invite you to take a trip down memory lane with us and discover what the WMC has been doing in the community for the last 20 years.

My best regards,
Hassan Samrhouni

Note from Joseph Braude to WMC, Dear members of the Washington Moroccan American Club,

In 2008 the Moroccan police became the first Arab security service to grant sustained, inside access to a writer, enabling him to spend four months reporting on their operations from inside a police precinct in Casablanca. I am that writer, and my new book on the experience is both a real-life murder mystery and an unusual examination of Moroccan society and government in the 21st century. It's called The Honored Dead: A Story of Friendship, Murder, and the Search for Truth in the Arab World. You can pick up a copy in most bookstores, or online via www.josephbraude.com .

But in 2008, one Arab government granted a Western journalist unprecedented access to its security services, and the outcome of his reporting offers gritty insights into the changes now underway throughout the Arab world.
